Putting out spot fires – no time to back burn!
Having canvassed hundreds of nurses and midwives who are either aspiring to be manager or are already managing teams, one of the things that worries them the most is managing the workload.
These people have characterised it in the following ways:
“Putting out spot fires – no time to back burn!”
“The boundaries are blurred”
“Heavy – lots of things on my plate”
“Unexpected emergencies and issues cropping up – I go from one issue to the next and never feel like I get anything done”
And they feel stressed, frustrated, overwhelmed, and worried that one of the many balls they are juggling will drop – and something terrible will happen.
The job is amorphous, with no hard edges – and what edges there are seem to grow with each passing day. And even though the work is 24 hours, 365 days a year, there is no handover at the end of your shift.
So this month is all about managing time and priorities.
Over the next few weeks, I’ll share some helpful tips, tricks and a cool tool to help you better manage your priorities and find more time. But I’d love to hear what you do to manage your time – so drop me an email.
